“We Were Golden”

The Soundtrack Album

Flashback to 1967!

Song Title:

“289”   This song opens the story as a theme for Mikey’s in the Mustang  and is a reflection of the car songs of the time.

Joe CollegeA typical rocker of the time, the song reflects the large number of college students that attended Junior College, many to avoid the draft.  To be hip and cool was the rule.

A Moment In Time An instrumental flashback to romantic and innocent moments, slow dancing in a gym at prom.

Pedal Car  (beach version) An impromptu at the beach singalong by various members of the band and their friends. A little kid version of songs about cruising with your girlfriend.

Blue Wave An instrumental that is a mixture of 12-string and surf guitars evoking the change created by the folk-rock movement. The song harks back to a time of romance, longing and heartbreak.

Sweetheart  This is the “Hit That Never Was”.  This fully developed song is the studio production of the band, intended to be their rocket ship to stardom and to lead the album they never got to finish. It was the high point of Mikey’s in the Mustang as a band during their early years.

2017  (Reunion Concert)

Song Title:

Pedal Car  (Mikey & Bobby) This version of the song shows the brotherhood of the bandmates some 50 years later as they join together to celebrate their past.

The Concert: Reprise’s of:  Reprises of Joe College, 289, A Moment in Time, Blue Wave and Sweetheart to open the concert. These are followed by…

Friar of the Waves  A tribute to drummer and bandmate Denny who became a Franciscan friar, and continues to surf in Malibu as he is a priest at the Serra Retreat Center.  Done in true surf-rock style.

We Were Golden   This is the song that is the key to the whole story as it is supposedly written by the sons of the old bandmates and performed by them at the concert as a tribute to their dads, the inspiration of Brian Wilson, and the fallen in Vietnam.

The Music of My Life  A reflective feel-good song about how music follows you through your life and can always move you in spirit to a bygone moment in time. It is the conclusion of the concert and the finale for the story of Mikey’s in the Mustang.

Bonus Tracks:   TAPS  In tribute to their bandmate and the fallen in all wars, this solo guitar rendition of the military salute moves from respect for their sacrifice to depicting chaos, in protest of all wars and the destruction they cause.

The Curl: A little tribute to surf bands.
