The Soundtrack of an Era

At the core of the project lies the 12-song “Soundtrack Album”, created to accompany the upcoming film.

Crafted by Mike Mahoney and Dave Blackburn, the songs evoke the carefree yet transformative spirit of Southern California in the ‘60s. Each track tells a story, transporting listeners to a time of beach days, first loves, and bands forming in garages.  Unlike the normal process of creating a soundtrack for a movie which is usually done after the script is written.  Mike, who has written the storyline for the script, determined the sound (song) that would fit the moment in the scene as he visualized it as he wrote it.  Each song has a unique part in the story of We Were Golden.

“Back in the ’60s, you could hear a song once and feel its impact immediately.”

“We Were Golden”

This standout single captures the heart of the project. Built on lush harmonies, intricate instrumentation, and vivid imagery, the song is a celebration of innocence and creativity before the Vietnam War changed everything. Its structure—a bold introduction, a reflective middle section, and a triumphant finale—echoes the emotional highs and lows of youth during that era.  And was created as a tribute to Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys and all his decades of music. Included in the lyrics are several references to titles of Wilson’s songs “Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Surfer Girl, God Only Knows, etc.”

A Musical Time Machine

From jangly 12-string guitars and tambourine grooves to cascading vocal stacks, every note and lyric is a window into a time when music was melody-driven and emotion-filled. As producer Dave Blackburn explains, “Back in the ’60s, you could hear a song once and feel its impact immediately.”
